The must-attend event of the season is this weekend

Ashleigh Coldicutt Wednesday, February 15th, 2017

The highlight of the summer social calendar is upon us, and not even the forecast rain could dampen our excitement for the Land Rover NZ Polo Open in Clevedon this Sunday 19 February.

Donning their Sunday best with a glass of bubbles in hand, guests will be privy to NZ Polo Open’s 40th year celebrations, as professional polo players from around the world compete for the coveted title of Australasia’s Premier polo champions.

Established in 1977, this year’s prestigious sporting event features four teams hailing from New Zealand, Australia, Argentina and England – Rodd & Gunn, Tiger Building, Knight Frank and PDL Semco, who will all compete in Sunday’s final.

Never watched Polo before? Don’t fret, let us break it down for you…

The Land Rover NZ Polo Open comprises six chukkas (aka the number of periods of 7.5 minutes into which a game of polo is divided). During each chukka, a player will use a different horse, and most professional players use more than six horses during a polo match. Eight players and eight horses are on the polo ground at any one time, which is larger than six rugby fields (or 10 acres). Each horse is extremely skilled with super fast reflexes, and run and turn at speeds of 35 km/h. New Zealand polo ponies are highly regarded around the globe for their pure bloodlines and well established breeding methods.
