Easy and delicious mulled wine recipe

Take a roaring fireplace, snuggle up beside it in a coat or blanket, fill your cup with some sweet mulled wine and you've got one easy peasy recipe to winter coziness. But lesser known is the easy peasy recipe with which you can also create your own mulled wine: saving dollars, breathing new life into your favourite drop and providing an ideal warm alternative for winter drinking. Give this a go and you'll be sipping your way to winter wonderland in no time at all.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 orange (sliced into thin rounds)
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon (or alternatively, 2 cinnamon sticks)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

Method:

  1. Pour the water into a large stainless steel pot and add the sugar, cinnamon, cloves and slices of orange.  Slowly bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and leave to simmer.
  2. After 15 minutes, stir in the wine. Keep simmering the mixture but make sure it remains on a medium-low heat (unless you want the alcohol to boil off!)
  3. Leave over this medium-low heat for another 15 minutes - or for up to three hours. Use a soup ladle to serve it warm straight into glasses - this recipe should serve about 8.

  4. Serve with garnishes of your choice (see our serving suggestion above) and drink whilst toasty warm!
