With another coveted light device on the market, our beauty editors test drive the new Shark Beauty CryoGlow LED Mask

Gentle and painless with zero downtime, light therapy has been used by beauty experts for eons to treat everything from breakouts to rosacea and collagen breakdown. Overshadowed in the past by more invasive procedures, it is now firmly back in every aesthetician’s office and beauty clinic, with some seriously great, premium at-home devices also available to anyone serious about supporting skin health.

Developed by NASA in the 80s to speed up astronauts’ tissue repair, LED light therapy recently found its way back into the current zeitgeist as an Insta-worthy skin treatment loved by all. With a huge beauty editor and celebrity fan base, most LED devices work with a sort of traffic light system depending on your particular skin goal: different colours elicit various benefits and can be combined for extra skincare clout, and regular LED light therapy can boost collagen, reduce acne bacteria and even prevent pigmentation before it happens.

The Shark CryoGlow mask, however, combines the powers of LED light with cryotherapy, a cold-therapy treatment that still carries an air of mystery for the everyday self-care enthusiast. Traditionally reserved for high-end spas, cryotherapy is steadily moving into the at-home beauty realm, and Shark Beauty’s CryoGlow LED Mask is leading the way.

I was immediately intrigued by this world-first combination and excited to unbox the CryoGlow, which has the heft and tech of a super-premium beauty offering and includes a remote to select your preferred light mode and control the eye pads. After the remote was fully charged, I strapped on the mask by way of the adjustable velcro straps and was equally impressed by the silicone design, which feels immediately comfortable on the face. There are four treatment options—the first is six minutes and helps to reduce fine lines for anti ageing, the second is eight minutes and helps to target acne, the third is four minutes and maintains radiance and glow, and the fourth is no LED lights, just the under-eye depuffing. Activated in all four modes, the built-in undereye cooling pads are a revelation when used in the morning to depuff the eyes and generally wake up the senses, and I love that you can tweak the cooling intensity mid-treatment if you feel like a little more or less chill.

Like all at-home beauty solutions—be they skincare or tools—this mask will really prove its mettle when used regularly over time, not as a single treatment, and I’m here for the journey.
