Best looks from last year's Met Gala – and what to expect from this year

As Winter creeps up on us poor South Hemisphere citizens, the guys up North are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Summer. For some, Spring may remind you of only blooming gardens, pollen allergies and floral prints (for Spring? Groundbreaking). The who's who of Hollywood, however, has occupied their thoughts with the highest couture event of the year: the Met Gala.

Happening every year on the first Monday of May, the biggest event of the fashion fundraising calendar takes place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since 1995, the event chair has been no other than Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue. For help, she enlists the hottest celebrities of the last year. In 2019, the co-chairs are no other than Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Alessandro Michele.

The event is known for hosting celebrities going all-out with their costumes. The themes are always chosen based on the chosen Spring exhibition. Last year, it was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, which meant Vatican levels of art and luxury. This year's theme is Camp: Notes on Fashion, which Andrew Bolton, curator of the exhibition, explains as "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration... style at the expense of content... the triumph of the epicene style". No doubt there will be plenty of room for extravagance, then.

To further inspire and excite you for the event, we hand-picked our favourite costumes from last year:
