Resort Dressing with Rita Montezuma

Portuguese creator Rita Montezuma has rightfully earned pole position on the Pinterest boards of the fashion set world over with her maximalist style and aesthetic travel content. Not afraid of playing with patterns, prints and vibrant colours; Rita quickly became a style muse for the Remix team, especially for her resort looks. Now that the days are waning and we’re dreaming of our next tropical escape, we spoke to the creator and sought out advice on all things travel, personal style, and, of course, dressing for the destination.

You are a style icon for so many people, where do you find your style inspiration?

I take a lot of inspiration from my surroundings, especially Lisbon—the colours, the prints, and the sunny weather naturally push me toward fun, vibrant looks. I also find fashion weeks incredibly inspiring; watching the shows and seeing how people interpret trends in their own way always sparks new ideas for me.

As someone with a strong sense of personal style, do you have any advice for those curating their own dream wardrobe?

Don’t overthink it! I don’t try to fit into a specific aesthetic—I love mixing different styles and experimenting. My best advice is to start with good basics (for me, that’s great jeans, some stripes thrown in, and solid footwear). Then, invest in accessories because they can completely transform an outfit. A simple look can become something special with the right bag, sunglasses, or jewellery.

You are always traveling—do you have a specific outfit formula that helps you when packing for trips?

Absolutely! I always plan my outfits ahead—it might sound intense, but I can’t function with a suitcase that doesn’t work together, especially on longer trips with limited space. My formula is choosing a colour palette based on the destination and then pulling pieces that mix and match easily. Accessories are key again—something as simple as a scarf or a statement bag can make the same outfit feel brand new.

What are your top tips for building the perfect resort/holiday wardrobe?

Start with good swimwear—feeling confident in a bikini or swimsuit makes all the difference. My go-to for summer days is always a dress, especially a white one. It’s fresh, effortless, makes me look tanner (which is always a plus), and pairs well with any accessories. My unexpected must-have? A classic pair of black Havaianas—they work for the beach, brunch, dinner, and even a night out. A true summer essential!

You are the queen of quirky accessories! What are your go-to accessory brands?

I love Pardo Hats, Sita Nevado, Uno de 50, Ginger Joyería, Amori Amori, Project Lobster, and Sézane—they all have such unique, special pieces that add personality to any outfit.

What are three clothing items in your wardrobe that you can’t live without?

My khaki parachute pants—I wear them at least once a week. My yellow Mexico 66 Onitsuka Tigers—they go with everything and add the perfect pop of color. My brown leather jacket—it’s timeless and makes every outfit look cooler.

Out of all the destinations you’ve visited, which has been your favourite?

Without a doubt, Brazil. The energy there is just so me. The people, the food, the music—everything feels so alive. Rio de Janeiro is my ideal mix of city, beach, and mountains all in one place. I always feel my best when I’m there.

What is your dream travel destination, and why?

If there were a place where fashion met surf culture, that would be my dream destination! It’s the perfect blend of two of my biggest passions.

Do you think you'll visit New Zealand anytime soon?

It’s actually a dream of mine! The landscapes look surreal—those beaches, mountains, and wide open spaces are stunning. I’d love to explore the local surf scene, too. Definitely on my bucket list!
