How Rodd & Gunn’s Pointer logo became a global Kiwi icon

While many qualifying marks constitute a successful brand, on a surface level, one’s ability to be recognised is perhaps the clearest — the unique identifiers that become a brand’s hallmark. It’s an impressive yet rare accomplishment, but one Rodd & Gunn knows all too well. This year, the heritage Kiwi-born-and-bred brand celebrates 80 years of its ever-iconic Gunner English Pointer Dog logo — the very symbol stitched onto its equally iconic rugby jerseys, cotton-rich shirting, and array of evergreen, Kiwi-confident pieces.

"The Pointer represents everything Rodd & Gunn stands for, honesty, pride, loyalty and playfulness. Celebrating its 80-year history is a way to honour the values that continue to guide the brand today, across every market we operate in, and experience we offer our customer" says Rodd & Gunn CEO, Mike Beagley.

To mark the occasion, Rodd & Gunn kicked off celebrations in style at The Lodge Commercial Bay, welcoming friends, VIPs, and press for a night of recognition honouring the legacy of one of New Zealand’s most established and iconic brands. The cherry on top came in the form of illumination — the Pointer logo projected onto Auckland’s very own Sky Tower. And it’s just the beginning. Celebrations are set to continue throughout the year, as the globally loved brand gears up for events across the rest of New Zealand before taking the festivities on tour to the UK, US, Australia, and Canada. After all, true icons don’t stay local for long.

From the black-sand-flecked coastlines of Aotearoa to the cobbled streets of London, this Gunner Dog emblem has amassed legions of loyal wearers worldwide, cherished for the brand’s ingrained ability to create classic yet contemporary clothes — woven with an inbuilt confidence for the man and woman who relish quality and effortless sensibility. From hand-crafted leather luggage, a scaled range of footwear to the rugby jerseys that have undoubtedly become the brand’s bread and butter, from robust yet luxuriously soft ZQRX knitwear to capsule-wardrobe staple chinos, Rodd & Gunn has never been about showboating. After all, there’s little need to stray from the Kiwi sensibility that keeps it steady and assured. It’s timeless, versatile, and wearable — and that’s exactly what it should be about.

But beyond the visuals, the Pointer Dog logo signifies much more. Eight decades on, it continues to define the very essence of the brand — one rooted in craftsmanship, loyalty, patience, and time-honoured sporting traditions.
