The end of an era, but the beginning of an exciting new one
We gather here today to commemorate Crushes of 225 Karangahape Road. For more than a decade, Crushes has championed considered and curated vintage clothing while spotlighting the incredible homegrown talent shaping Aotearoa’s design landscape. And for anyone who has stepped through its doors, chances are you’ve been greeted by co-owner Rose Hope’s unmistakable warmth — a defining thread in the community spirit she and co-owner Sarah have cultivated so effortlessly, and that so many try (and fail) to emulate. Now, the duo are preparing for a new chapter. As they prepare to close their current doors, a shiny new set waits just two doors down. The larger, brighter space will house even more of Crushes’ signature treasures and community-driven Crushes Social Club events, and marks the arrival of a dedicated Thea Matcha bar, an in-house florist, and expanded menswear offerings As Karangahape Road continues to evolve — bolstered by increased foot traffic from soon-to-open train stations — Crushes is perfectly poised to grow alongside it.

The belt making waves
Tied around the waists of style’s most wanted or draped around the necks of fashion’s forward thinkers, your feed — like mine — has likely been flooded with this season’s must-have accessory: the shell belt. The belt in question is the lovechild of Oosterom founder Nicole and friend (and stylist) Levi Tan, created after a serendipitous meeting of shared creativity earlier this year. Your eye is immediately drawn to the polished statement shell, flanked by delicate silk flowers from the Oosterom archive and clusters of freshwater pearls, all strung together on a skinny, silk shoelace-style tie. It’s no surprise the first release was a sell-out success. For those who missed out the first time, consider this your second chance. Nicole and Levi have been busy crafting more shell belts just in time for Christmas gifting — whether for someone special or a well-deserved me-to-me moment. Pre-orders are now open; find more here.

Summer’s new neighbourhood hangout
Family aside, if there’s one thing Martha misses from the UK, it’s the proud, ever-present pub culture the country is so beloved for. New Ponsonby neighbourhood eatery and hangout, Fireside, is set to fuel her nostalgia one foamy pulled pint at a time — and may we add, just in time for summer. Taking over the former brick-lined Pano Vino space, Fireside is the latest love child of Norma Taps and Honest duo Luke Jones and Dave Lincoln, who opened the doors to their new spot just last week. Across its two floors, Fireside offers distinctly different — yet equally enticing — experiences. Downstairs, you’ll find an unpretentious pub pouring from 10 beer taps (Guinness included) alongside wines, and serving up iconic pub classics: think chicken parmas, fish and chips, and hearty Sunday roasts. Upstairs, the tone shifts to a more refined dining room, where chef Kererū Wilson (ex-Depot, Cazador) leads an organic-led, seasonally driven menu. It’s also where you’ll gain access to the rooftop deck — a space with after-work summer sessions written all over it.
