Here are the best things to do in Newmarket at night

Looking for something fun to do after work to break up the week? Or, after a first date destination with enough background buzz to disguise any awkwardness? Good news - Newmarket, will satisfy both those needs - and more.

Newmarket, Auckland’s premier shopping and dining destination, has long been a happening suburb. Whether you’re craving a bagel or a brew, a night at the flicks or to shop up a storm, it’s got everything you could possibly want all in one place. What’s more, while it’s fun in the day, it only gets better by night.

Below, Remix rounds up seven things to do in Newmarket at night.

1. Shopping after dark

There's no question that Newmarket has a lot to offer in the way of retail therapy. From high-end fashion boutiques, flagship stores, design and homeware outlets, and the only David Jones in Auckland, there really is something for everyone.

If you’re a 9-5er and struggle to get your retail fix outside of work hours (we know your pain) then rejoice because Newmarket offers late night shopping till 9pm on Thursdays AND Fridays.

Our go-to stores:

Father Rabbit Select

Exclusive to Newmarket, pop into Father Rabbit Select to peruse a curated edit of stylish home and lifestyle wares. From exclusive artisan goods to covetable crockery to timeless fashion staples, the dreamy offering would even make Nigella weak at the knees.

Deadly Ponies

Possibly the most coveted leather goods brand in the country, Deadly Ponies are renowned near and afar for their luxurious bags and accessories. But, be warned: enter with caution. The store looks like it’s straight out of the pages of Architectural Digest - you won’t want to leave.

Superette

Stocking over 150 premium brands, you’ll be hard-pressed to walk out of Superette empty handed. Established in 2001, Superette is a mecca for all things fashion (both men and women), accessories, home and gifts.

2. (Over)indulge at Auckland’s only rooftop food dining precinct

Whether you’re after a spot to line the stomach ahead of some retail therapy or to reward an impressive step count after shopping, look no further than Westfield Newmarket’s Rooftop Dining Precinct.

Our top picks:

White + Wong’s

With sweeping views that extend out to Rangitoto Island, you’ll find White + Wong’s perched at the highest point of the rooftop. Be immersed in a vibrant atmosphere, while grazing on Asian fusion favourites like dumplings, pork bao buns and duck pancakes.

Something and Social

Great drinks, super food and a view to match, what more could you want? The idea behind the biz is that when you’re in the mall you are doing ‘Something’, and when you finish doing your something, they’re there for you to do the ‘Social’.

INCA

South American street food meets East Asian cuisine at Inca. Glazed chicken breast, BBQ lamb ribs, crispy prawn tacos and salmon sashimi are just a few of our favourites on the menu. To finish why not frog yourself on a scoop ( or two)  of the salted caramel popcorn ice cream?

3. Or, stick to the strip…

To make the decision of where to eat that more difficult, there’s also no shortage of eateries scattered around Newmarket.

Tucks and Bao

If you’re in the mood for a quick fix Tucks and Bao is the place to be. Inspired by global street food this casual dining destination is one for the whole family. Choose from their Asian fusion Bao’s, Tuck’s sharing plates, bowls and meals.

Nonna

If you’re looking to travel to Italy for the night then Nonna is the place to go. Serving up authentic, hand made pasta and traditional sauces, you’ll leave with a belly full and a heart even fuller.

V.T Station

This railway station themed Indian eatery takes you on an authentic journey across India. From small dishes and Tandoor grills to scrumptious curries V.T. Station will take you on a culinary escape. Oh, and don’t forget to try their abundance of delicious cocktails, crafted to fit your dining experience.

4. Bowling, beers and a circus-themed funhouse

Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq

Inside Westfield Newmarket, you’ll also find Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq - your one-stop entertainment destination. With bowling lanes, arcade and ticket games, virtual reality rides and dodgems, as well as a full service bar, it’s impossible not to come out buzzing.

5. Lounge in movie viewing luxury

Rialto Cinemas

Rialto Cinemas is the largest arthouse cinema in Auckland and features seven large stadium-style cinemas with luxury seats decked out with tables. The perfect date night or cosy escape from the winter weather, Rialto Cinemas is one of Newmarket’s most underrated gems.

6. Get arty

Art Select Gallery

Brush up on your artist culture at Art Select Gallery. Featuring Limited exhibits and new content every month there’s always something new to see. See something you just have to take home while you’re visiting? The gallery offers a service that allows you to try the piece in your home to ensure it’s the perfect fit.

7. Time for a drink?

From craft beer to tailor-made cocktails, there’s something for everyone in the heart of Newmarket.

Take your pick…

Sardine Cocktail Bar

Adjoined to White + Wong’s is its sibling, Sardine. The eclectic cocktail bar serves up some of Auckland’s best bespoke cocktails and brews. Our recommendations: Clover Club, X Marks The Spot and Twentieth Century.

The Lumsden Freehouse

Dubbed the ‘home of craft beer’ in Newmarket, this place is an experience in its own right. Offering up over 120 craft beers you most definitely won’t be stuck for choice. If bourbons are your poison, they also have the largest bourbon selection in Auckland.

Baha Betty

Technically this place is a kitchen and bar but the cocktails are too good not to rave about. Inspired by Mexican and Californian culture, Baha Betty serves up the best tacos in town with accompanying cocktails to match. If you’re looking to kill a dinner and drinks bird with one stone, this is it.
