How to spend International Day of Happiness in Fiji, the ‘happiest place on Earth’

In my opinion, ‘happiness’ is very much synonymous with sunshine, palm trees, and sparkling blue water. Conveniently, the Fiji Islands possess all of these qualities.

This year, I visited Fiji to experience International Day of Happiness in the ‘happiest place on Earth’. Just three hours away from home, the Fiji Islands offer visitors a taste of paradise, encouraging them to immerse themselves into a ‘happier’ way of life.

Seeking ultimate bliss, I hopped on the Malolo Cat from Port Denarau to spend the day at Lomani Island Resort & Spa. An adults-only resort on Fiji's Malolo Lailai Island, designed to inspire feelings of connection, wellness and joy; there couldn’t have been a better place to celebrate International Day of Happiness.

After being greeted with a song, a fresh coconut and a refreshing cold towel; I headed over to Lomani’s newly-opened spa. Nestled amongst lush tropical gardens, I started my treatment in the Thalassotherapy Centre, where I was guided through a restorative sequence by my amazing spa therapist. Designed to harness the healing power of water, I hopped between the sauna, ice bath and plunge pool – a sensory journey designed to restore balance to body and mind. The practice of contrast therapy has a list of health and wellness benefits longer than my arm, but the immediate effect was pure and utter relaxation.

With tranquility and rest at the heart of Lomani Island Resort & Spa’s hospitality philosophy, what came next was possibly the most relaxing massage I have ever experienced. The talented therapist worked wonders at working away the knots I had acquired from the plane ride over, and I left feeling brand new.

From the moment I arrived in Fiji, I was reminded of the warmth and happiness that practically pours out of the Fijian people. It really does make you think that their reputation as ‘the happiest place on Earth’ might just be justified.
