Isabel Estate's Chardonnay is an absolute winner
Marlborough may be synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc, but Isabel Estate just reminded the wine world that New Zealand Chardonnay is a quiet killer. Their 2022 Wild Barrique Chardonnay—a citrusy, stone-fruit stunner wrapped in flinty elegance—was recently named Wine of the Year at the London Wine Competition, an award that doesn’t just care how good it tastes (it does), but how well it dresses and what kind of value it brings to the party. It's the first time Isabel Estate even entered, and they walked out with the crown like it was no big deal, while quite literally mid-harvest. As Chief Winemaker Jeremy McKenzie put it, they’re already banking on the 2025 vintage, but for now, Marlborough’s best-kept secret is officially out.
