Australian-born actress Rainbow Wedell shares her thoughts on what it's like to play a character far different from her life

At only 24 years old, Australian-born actress Rainbow Wedell is constantly trying to prove herself — and it's working. Rainbow stars in Season 3 of the Paramount Plus series School Spirits, an American supernatural teen horror drama series — which has already been renewed for a fourth season. Rainbow plays Claire Zolinkski, a high school cheerleader who, after the disappearance of Maddie (played by Peyton List), gets put into the spotlight as a suspect. Ahead of the latest season, Remix spoke with Rainbow about what else is coming, what a day on set looks like, and what it's like to play a character far different from her life.

Claire is a cheerleader juggling friendships and rivalries—did you pull from any personal experiences, or did you find inspiration elsewhere for her?

I drew inspiration from a few different places. Iris and Missy Pantone from Bring It On were strong visual and emotional references. I watched the documentary Cheer to really immerse myself in the cheerleader mindset. Music is also essential for me when stepping into a character, so I listened to ‘Messy’ by Lola Young and anything Doechii on repeat.

How do you balance Claire’s confident, popular cheerleader side with the moments where she’s vulnerable and real?

I see Claire’s confidence as something she’s learned to put on, especially in social situations where she’s expected to be ‘perfect’ all the time. Her vulnerability comes through in the quieter moments, when that performance drops. I focused on letting both sides coexist until she finally finds a safe space with her new friends, Maddie, Nicole, Xavier, and Simon.

Give us a peek behind the scenes—what’s a typical day on set like for you, from call time to wrap?

Every day is different. Some days we have really early call times, and other days we’re shooting late into the night or even overnight, so it keeps you on your toes. With so many people—and dogs—on set, there’s never a dull moment. Between takes, we’ll hang out in the green room, play games, rehearse, and drink lots of coffee.

On-screen you play Claire, off-screen you have your own style—how do you keep your personal fashion choices true to you while working on set?

Costume plays a huge part in how I find a character, so wearing Claire’s outfits really helps me feel more connected to her. Claire and I don’t always have the same style, so it was fun to experiment, and I absolutely borrowed a few things from her wardrobe.

You’ve played everything from magical dramas to supernatural thrillers—how do you switch between such different worlds and characters?

I’ve had the chance to play in many fantastical worlds. I love learning about the history and rules of that universe. But I focus on the character first, how they move, what they listen to, who they love. Once I lock into who they are emotionally, the world kind of falls into place.

What’s your favourite thing about working with Peyton List and Milo Manheim?

I’ve learned so much from Peyton and Milo. There’s something really special about the energy they bring to set. They’re incredibly hardworking and kind. I feel really grateful to get to work and share the screen with them.

Fashion seems like a big part of your life—how would you describe your personal style?

I love so many different styles, I enjoy the comfortability of streetwear, but I’m always drawn to elegant and timeless design. And of course, I love the drama of getting dressed up in a ball gown.

You love thrifting and making your own clothes—what’s the most unique or memorable piece you’ve ever created or found?

I love up-cycling! One of my favourite things to do is find a beautiful dress and transform it into a matching shirt and skirt set.

Your charity work has taken you across the globe—what lessons or experiences from those projects stick with you the most?

It shaped me immensely; I was able to absorb from different cultures and learn from people all around the world. They taught me empathy, perspective, and the importance of kindness and human connection. Those experiences will live with me forever.

Being away from Australia, what do you miss the most about home?

I miss my friends and family dearly. And the coffee, obviously.

Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to Remix readers?

Thank you for reading and for the continued support, it truly means the world to me.
