Five Minutes With Local Artist Shannon Te Ao

Kate Roydhouse and Nicky Verdon are Elam art school graduates who outside of their day jobs spend their time making, collecting and writing about art. Each week the duo will share with us a memento from the local art scene... Shannon Te Ao                   What art school did you go to? Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland. Graduated in 2009. What was the last piece of art you made? Wrapped a shoot yesterday in Wellington for a brand new work, a remake of a compilation of 1960's home-videos found in the Film Archive. Before that, I finished a work shot in an old gaol/jail in Dunedin. Who’s currently your favourite artist? Harry Dodge and Stanya Kahn. I recently re-watched their work All Together Now (2008). Lo-fi, apocalyptic, structuralist drama, slapstick, romance. How many tattoos do you have? 5 What are you listening to right now? Fela Kuti, Sorrow,Tears and Blood. What’s one of the best art shows you’ve seen this year (can be from around the world)? I saw True Stories/Scripted Realities a couple weeks ago at The Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts in Pakuranga. I had been interested in a few of the artists' work for sometime - Yael Bartana, Liam Gillick. A really interesting group of works that all seemed to reflect upon their medium from different angles, presented with enough ambition to make it regionally significant. Do you miss marmite? I am Vegemite kid. The best film of 2012 is? I saw Night Fishing, directed by Chan-wook Park. I am not sure if it came out this year. Besides the technical constraints they placed upon the production, I thought it was pretty amazing. What are you reading at the moment? Just finished the first couple of chapters of Michael de Certeau's, The Practice of Everyday Life. My brain is hurting! What’s your Favourite TV show? Made in Chelsea When you’re not making art, what are you doing? Chasing my daughter Ella around. Trying to practice my writing. Both of these normally lead to a decent snooze on the couch when I can fit them in. Tell us in 10 words or less what made you decide to become an artist? I wanted to become a better artist than I was.
