Elephant In The Room: Vanishing Elephant S/S '13

Words by Catrin Owen. In case you weren’t aware of the elephant in the room, Vanishing Elephant hit Auckland with their spring/summer 2013 collection last week. Presented at the Flying Fish Studios in Ponsonby, this was the Sydney-based clothing label’s first show across the ditch and it was a powerful collaboration with Redken 5th Avenue NYC as hair partner. Redken Hair Director Sara Allsop lead backstage hair styling for the show, which complemented the new collection by not overpowering the clothing. The new unisex collection ‘Continuous New Beginnings’ showcased a series of printed casualwear, which is a modern take on the classic Vanishing Elephant suiting. The fusion of strong tailored menswear and womenswear incorporates a street style, but maintains the more classic Vanishing Elephant look. The models’ hair was inspired by 1970’s style, with female models wearing strong centre parts that framed the face and perfectly matched the tailored suits. Using Redken’s Layer Lift to create the looks, Sara described the looks as “a soft and powdery texture crowned by a noisy exterior.” As the stylist and visionary behind the hair, Sara also said “it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to work exclusively with such a popular label.
