Iconic in every sense of the word, Kylie Minogue is no one-trick pony. Documenting the rise of Kylie’s star involves crossing between her time as an award-winning singer, to a much-loved sitcom actress, entrepreneur, philanthropist and style icon. But now, the ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ star is lending her creative eye to an entirely new project – her self-titled range of glasses and sunglasses at leading optical retailer, Specsavers.
The Kylie Minogue Eyewear collection, boasts both edginess and elegance in its 25 glasses and four prescription sunglasses styles – equal parts fashion forward as it is functional.
Falling into three core themes of Modern Classics, Subtle Bling and Reinvented Vintage, Kylie notes how the variety of shapes, colours and textures in the range speak volume about the wearer’s personal style.
‘Designing the glasses and collaborating with Specsavers has been a fabulous experience. I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from the idea of modern classics, popular shapes and styles that suit most people, but with my own personal twist on each frame,’ she says.
The pint-sized star is no stranger to specs, herself, she’s been wearing them for more than twenty years. ‘I first started wearing glasses when I was in my early twenties. I’d been experiencing headaches and had difficulty maintaining focus when reading, so I had my eyes tested and I’ve been a specs wearer ever since,’ Kylie explains.
Team Remix were lucky enough to jet across the ditch to preview the collection, which launches on Thursday March 9.
A host of Australian and New Zealand media piled into Sydney’s Establishment Hotel, all keen for a glimpse of the ‘Love At First Sight’ singer and to ogle her new range of eyewear.
Following a catwalk show including homegrown Aussie indigenous talent, Samantha Harris, Kylie was interviewed on stage by E! Australia’s Ksenija Lukich.
And it was total love at first sight when we landed eyes on Kylie Minogue 05 – a marbled, dusky pink frame complete with a gentle sloped cat eye.
From the sunglasses range, we couldn’t look past Kylie Sun 04, a retro-fit style with stitched leather and taupe arms.
Specsavers senior buyer Stig Hansen says Kylie was an easy choice for the brand’s next designer collaboration. ‘We wanted a true global icon that could work across all markets. Kylie popped up because she’s got a lovely personality, is down-to-earth, and people really aspire to the way she looks and dresses,’ he says. ‘It was really a no-brainer.’
‘The collection appeals to a lot of different women from all ages. Personally, I like the thin metal styles with leather detailing. It comes as an optical and sunglass as well, this trend with thin metal eyewear is coming through a lot this season,’ Stig says.
With over 30 years in the optics industry, Stig keeps a close watch on eyewear trends. What can we expect from the coming season? ‘We’re seeing a lot of ‘90s trends come back through – think really shallow frames and milky opaque hues. In terms of colours, it’s muted pastels in shades of blue, green, pink, brown and red,’ he says.
The Kylie Minogue Eyewear collection is available exclusively from Specsavers nationwide, from Thursday March 9. Can’t decide on which pair to choose? You don’t have to, Specsavers offer a too-good-to-miss-deal of two pairs for $299.
