Swarovski’s Gema and Idyllia collections celebrate the art of layering

With cool mornings, warm days and frigid evenings, winters in Tāmaki Makaurau are a sartorial nightmare. As a result, layering becomes default; jackets that can be pulled on and off with ease, jumpers on hand just in case the sun goes into hiding, and, when we really get pulled into the clutches of July and August, a merino base for good measure. From a fashion perspective, it’s a means of necessity, a way to balance our ever-changing weather systems. This winter season, though, it’s a matter of form, too.

Swarovski’s newest collections, Gema and Idyllia, are built with a sense of playfulness at their core. The former plays with shape, colour and structure to add a layer of texture and vibrancy to any look, while the latter leans into our dreamlike tendencies, with fruit, animals and hearts galore.

The 2025 winter in the Northern Hemisphere, with its long, dark days and pervasive gloom, spawned a new wardrobe genre: dopamine dressing. As a way to boost moods and inject a sense of colour into their lives, our neighbours at the top of the world were wearing the brightest outfits they could find. It’s a trend we’re borrowing as we enter the cooler months down under, too. And it’s the Gema and Idyllia pieces we’ll be reaching for time and time again to add a vivid touch to each fit.

There is so much to play with from these two collections. Designed in homage to Gustav Klimt, the Gema pieces are a statement in their own right, but they really come alive when working together. Imagine the asymmetric Gema pendant sitting elegantly below the huddled splendour of the green Gema necklace. On your wrist, the simplicity of the Idyllia bracelet is brought to life with charms that cater to your personality; perhaps a gold-plated clover charm for luck, or a ladybug for a sense of youthful nostalgia.

There was once a time when monochrome reigned supreme in New Zealand fashion, but recent years have, thankfully, brought in a love of colour. Whether you’re fully embracing the rainbow or simply dipping a toe into dopamine dressing, Swarovski’s Gema and Idyllia collections are your fast track to a dose of joy this winter.
