A Local’s Guide to Wellington, as told by fashion creator Lauren Brodie of @elbeefrivolousfashion
The very best guide to our capital, as told by fashion creator Lauren Brodie, the face behind the very viral @elbeefrivolousfashion.
There’s just something special about Aotearoa’s eclectic capital. Being a born and raised Wellingtonian who returned after spreading my wings overseas in my twenties, it’s clear that evolution and fresh ideas will always be a part of the city's story. Change, thankfully, does not come at the expense of longstanding gems, however, which form the heart and soul of the city’s culture. As the saying goes, ‘you can’t beat Wellington on a good day!’—but I think it’s pretty hard to beat on a bad day, too.
Coffee, matcha, and a little treat
Good coffee is non-negotiable, and luckily, you’ll be spoilt for choice. In a rush? Supreme Midland Park is where all the in-the-know office workers congregate during the working week. Add a cheese scone to your order, and thank me later. If you’re after the spot to chill, take in the vibes, and eat the best toast of your life, then Customs is where it’s at. On a calm day, the outside seats are the perfect place to enjoy the sun and take in the outfit inspiration from the Cuba Street crowd. Looking for something a little left of field? Pour and Twist is a specialty coffee and matcha bar serving serious brews that brighten up your Instagram feed. Think pink matcha and black sesame coffee.
Potter around the shops
The best shops in Wellington are like hanging out with your most effortlessly stylish friend, perfectly curated but still approachable. Sully’s is a gorgeous space that houses everything from clothing to accessories, to homeware and preloved goodness. Their jewellery section is particularly drool-worthy. For streetwear that won’t look like you raided your younger brother’s closet, you can’t go past Good as Gold—think niche brands and the coolest classics under one roof. They’ve been around for almost two decades, and for good reason.
In Wellington, you won’t go long without stumbling upon an op shop or consignment store. Hunters and Collectors is an institution with some of the most incredible vintage and designer finds you’ll get across not only in Te Whanganui a Tara, but throughout Aotearoa. It’s heaving with gems, so make sure to set aside time to dig. A newer, but just as fabulous, secondhand standout is Preloved Charlie’s. If you’re looking for a Y2K fix and the cutest selection of Coach handbags, then this is the place to be.
Now I would be remiss not to mention the designers that make Wellington the eclectic fashion feast what it is, and you would be heartbroken not to pay them a visit while you’re here—twenty-seven names, kowtow, and Yu Mei are all iconic for good reason.
Wander around the waterfront
Wellingtonians are at their happiest near the water, and there is no easier way to get around the city than by foot—or scooter—along the waterfront. On the way, you’ll find yourself distracted by buzzing eateries, interesting sculptures, and cultural landmarks like Te Papa and Circa Theatre. If you’re in the city on a Sunday morning, head over to the open-air Harbourside Market for very fresh produce, or enjoy some kai from one of the many food trucks while browsing handmade goodies.
Space out
Sometimes you just have to catch a vibe, and Space Place at Carter Observatory has something for everyone. By day, catch an educational planetarium show, and explore their multimedia exhibitions. By night, they hold album listening parties and sci-fi movie-watching sessions on their epic planetarium screen. If you’re into more of an internal zen, Numa Skin & Body Club will send you to another planet with their infrared sauna, followed by a facelift massage. My jawline has literally never looked so snatched.
Dinner's up
Ask any local for a dinner recommendation, and Kisa will inevitably be mentioned. Meals at this Middle Eastern marvel are packed with flavour, colour, complexity, and that indescribable feeling of comfort that will always make you want to return for more. The share plates are perfect for group dinners or a date night with your darling. And is there any better way to end the night than in a moody wine bar? Puffin has personality in spades and a drinks list that backs it up. In fact, you know what? I’d suggest starting the night there, too.
