Thinking about pulling a sickie? Here’s the best excuse to do it

With burnout now affecting 61% of the population (up from 53% in 2022), there’s never been a better time to call in a mental health day—and, as it turns out, sunshine might be the best medicine.

Enter the Sunshine Sickie. Our friends in South East Queensland have come up with the perfect antidote: an all-expenses-paid, two-night escape to the Sunshine Coast. Matt Stoeckel, CEO of Visit Sunshine Coast, says with more than half of New Zealand’s workforce feeling the weight of burnout, the remedy is simple. ‘Whether it’s a dip in the sea or a hike through the rainforest, a nature-based break is just the right medicine—and we’re inviting Kiwis to come and find their own sunshine moment,’ he explains.

From now until 11 September, you can apply for leave the fun way. On 18 September, 10 lucky winners will be selected and given just 12 hours to pack a bag, grab a mate, and board a direct Jetstar flight to the Sunshine Coast. Their prize? A 48-hour itinerary packed with some of the region’s best wellness, dining, and relaxation experiences.

Winners can choose from three curated mini-breaks designed for maximum recharge: the Vitamin SEA Booster, Forest Bathing Reboot, or Haycation Rejuvenation. Each is built around peace and wellness, with highlights including ocean floats, spa treatments, rainforest walks, long lunches, and farm stays.

Because let’s be honest: the best sick days are the ones you’re faking. So go on—fill your prescription.
