Eat, stay and play in Taranaki this winter
As if the mid-winter blues weren’t hitting hard enough, our social feeds are currently filled with envy-inducing euro-summer adventures. If you, like us, are stuck here this winter and you’re not quite ready to bust out the passport, but you’re desperate for a mini-holiday, look no further than Taranaki.
Perched on the western edge of the North Island, this under-the-radar destination is quickly making a name for itself as one of Aotearoa’s foodie destinations. The magic of Taranaki’s food scene lies in its roots–literally. With rich volcanic soil, sea-kissed air, and a climate made for growing, it’s no wonder the region’s local produce is next-level. But it’s the people behind the plates that bring the flavour. Think passionate chefs, growers, bakers, brewers, and baristas who aren’t afraid to do things differently.
It’s this mix of creativity and local pride that gives Taranaki its edge. One minute you’re sipping coffee roasted down the road, the next you’re digging into beachside seafood, stopping by a farmers market, or stumbling across a food truck that’s serving something seriously delicious. With black sand beaches, vibrant arts and culture, and the majestic Taranaki Maunga, this region offers an incredible backdrop to your culinary adventure. Whether it’s a morning surf at one of the many stops on the famous Surf Highway 45, or a golden hour walk along the Coastal Walkway, you’ll find more than just meals to feed your soul.
If you’re even slightly food-obsessed, time your trip around Feastival Taranaki–a five-day celebration of all things local and delicious. Running from 3–7 September, the Edge of Winter Feastival is packed with one-off events that range from elegant long lunches to off-the-beaten-path culinary adventures.
We’re most excited for: a sparkling long lunch at the chic Nice Hotel, where you’ll be welcomed with bubbles before tucking into a menu by the renowned Table Restaurant. A fly fishing meets cocktail kind of afternoon at Peihana Farm, pairing Juno Gin with award-winning Kapiti cheeses. And a slow, story-filled session with a legendary distiller at Fenton Street Distillery, sipping whiskey and gin while hearing the tales behind the bottles.
Need a base? King & Queen Hotel Suites in the West End Precinct is a great pick if you're after something boutique with a luxe edge. You’ll be a short stroll from some of Taranaki’s best eateries, the Govett-Brewster Gallery / Len Lye Centre, and the iconic Ozone Coffee Roastery, aka, you’ll never be too far from your next flat white or a fresh-out-of-the-oven pastry.
It’s a choose-your-own-adventure kind of weekend, with better food and local spirits. And with free buses looping around the maunga, it’s easy to make the most of it without having to worry about the drive. Check out the full line-up at feastival.co.nz. But don’t sit on it too long, these events are known to sell out. Our hot tip? Make sure to come hungry.
