Five beach day trips to take this summer (and what to stream on your way there)

Imagine if your phone had endless data? You could stream your favourite music all day at the beach. You’d be able to spam your ‘Gram with festival pics and videos – to your heart’s content.

Well, now you can do all of these things and much, much more thanks to Vodafone Pass – the cure for #FORO! What’s #FORO, you ask? It’s exactly what we’ve just talked about – the Fear of Running Out of data! We’ve all been there and it’s not pleasant.

This summer we’re enjoying #FORO-free good times with the four Vodafone Pass options: Social, Chat, Video and Music, all of which are available for one, seven and 28 days or – for those more serious about their streaming habits – monthly ongoing.

One of the best times to ensure you have endless data is when you’re road tripping across the country during the summer months. To get you excited for the summer ahead, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite summer spots and what we’ll be listening to on the drive there – #FORO free of course!

Castlepoint
Voted one of New Zealand’s top 10 most loved beaches, Castlepoint is an absolute must-visit if you are en route south. With swimming, surfing, walking trails and a lighthouse, Castlepoint exudes east coast charm with spectacular views of the beautifully rugged coastline. What we’re listening to: Santigold; M.I.A; Rhianna; Eminem and Beyonce, Walk on Water (single); Wild Thoughts, DJ Kahled ft Rhianna; The Chainsmokers; Lorde, Melodrama; Justin Bieber (always!)

Matauri Bay

Just north of Paihia lies Matauri Bay, so stunning that locals call the road above it ‘Million Dollar View Road’ because it overlooks Matauri’s long stretch of white sand and crystal-clear water. Overnight camping is permitted, and the bay makes for safe swimming, fishing and occasional surfing. You might have heard the name before as just off Matauri Bay’s shores lies the Rainbow Warrior. What we’re listening to: Shapeshifter, Stars; Rudimental, We the Generation; SBTRKT, Save Yourself; Sampha, Process; PNAU, Changa; Touch Sensitive, Visions; Calvin Harris, Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1; Klangkarussell, Netzwerk; Bakermat, assorted tunes; Jamie XX, In Colours.

Flagstaff Beach
Nestled below the mighty ranges of the Kahurangi National Park, Flagstaff Beach is located just minutes away from the centre of Karamea. This truly is the end of the road and those wishing to venture further north can do so via the Heaphy Track. Be warned: this is not a swimming beach, with strong rips and currents making it dangerous for even the strongest of swimmers – even on calm-looking days. Instead take in the tropical vibe of the long stretch of white sand, fringed with Nikau palm trees. What we’re listening to: Bastille, Wild World; Band of Horses, Why Are You OK; The Shins, Heartworms; Harry Styles; The XX, I See You (deluxe); Hot Chip, Why Make Sense?; Friendly Fires; Cut Copy, Haiku From Zero.

Mahia Peninsula
This is a well-known surf spot, loved by locals. It’s also dotted with small beaches, hidden behind tussock-covered sand dunes. Most of the beaches in this area are safe to swim at, and you’ll hardly see another soul while you’re there. If you’re looking to escape the crowds and have your own beach, Mahia Peninsula is the spot for you. What we’re listening to: Six60; Tiki Tane, With Strings Attached; Salmonella Dub; Kora; Fat Freddy’s Drop, Bays; all of the Kiwi greats!

Raglan
This bohemian surf town should be on everyone’s radar this summer. Even if you’re not a surfer you’ll enjoy the cute cafes, sweet boutiques, great pizza joint and an array of eclectic accommodation options. There are also great hikes in the area, including a walk out to the picturesque Bridalveil Falls. For the more adventurous, Mt Karioi makes for a decent hike with stunning views as far as Mt Taranaki on a clear day! What we’re listening to: Marlon Williams, Marlon Williams; Miley Cyrus, Younger Now; London Grammar, Truth is a Beautiful Thing; First Aid Kit, Stay Gold; CHVRCHES, The Bones of What You Believe; Lykke Li; Broods, Conscious; Vaults, Caught in Still Life
