VMG Race offers high-performance layers for on and off the water

VMG—Velocity Made Good—comes from a long sailing pedigree. Today, it's known as the name behind yachting's most technical crew wear, and now, there’s a new range built for the rest of us.

Earlier this year, VMG Race was launched—a range of high-performance sailing apparel engineered for durability, precision and unrestricted movement, both on and off the water. As Official Clothing Partner of Yachting New Zealand—and Official Partner of the NZL Sailing Team—the credentials run deep.

The range itself was founded by local sailing legend and four-time America’s Cup winner, Brad Butterworth. Inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2004, Butterworth’s career spans seven Cup campaigns, two Whitbread Round the World Races, 10 Sydney to Hobarts and eight Fastnets. He has claimed victories with Alinghi, won the Admiral’s Cup and Kenwood Cup, and secured multiple World Championships across leading classes—and VMG Race is a culmination of that experience.

These are pieces rooted in New Zealand’s sailing heritage. Shaped by decades at the forefront of the sport, these layers are made to handle real weather and real competition. From inshore racing to offshore campaigns, each garment is designed to withstand salt, spray and sun in the harshest marine environments.

But the apparel is just at home ashore as it is aboard. Whether you’re training, travelling, or on-the-go, these are practical, everyday pieces that can be worn for movement of any kind. Think squat-proof leggings with pockets, versatile waterproof jackets, quarter-zip fleece tops, organic cotton hoodies, and supportive yet lightweight bike shorts, crafted in easy-to-wear colours and hi-tech fabrics that stretch and support.

Every detail is carefully considered to optimise endurance, comfort and yes, performance. In yacht racing, helmsman and crew use VMG apparel to reduce drag and maximise the speed of the boat to arrive at the mark as quickly as possible.

Another milestone for the brand was the opening of VMG Clothing’s new retail store and showroom at Cracker Bay on Auckland’s Westhaven Drive—a fitting harbourside location for a brand that has water in its DNA.

Need for speed, indeed.
