Meet The Windsor Room, Fable Auckland’s newest dining destination

Everything old is new again at The Windsor Room, Fable Auckland’s newest dining destination. Paying homage to the building’s former life as Windsor House, the Art Deco-inspired restaurant brings vintage glamour to Queen Street, offering hotel guests and city-dwellers alike a charming escape from the everyday.

Opening on Thursday 15 October, The Windsor Room takes over from Cooke’s Bar and Restaurant, with interiors that nod to the building’s 1928 origins. High ceilings, gilded details and delicate geometric mouldings set the scene, while curtained nooks and dainty trinkets add a playful, old-world touch. The aim, says Fable Area General Manager Sean Slattery, is to reconnect diners with past favourites and special-occasion dishes, while leaving room for something new.

The menu takes a pan-European approach, with English classics and chophouse favourites firmly in the mix. Think Clevedon oysters with Champagne mignonette, Marlborough crab with cucumber jelly and hand-cut beef tartare, alongside five cuts of beef and lamb from the coal-fired grill, served with all the classic sauces.

Among the must-orders are the scotch egg with black pudding and heritage pork, bone marrow canoes and a 500-gram, 55-day-aged rump heart steak made for two. Naturally, there’s Yorkshire pudding on the side, ready to mop up every last drop of sauce.

Pudding keeps things traditional, with Eton mess, sticky toffee pudding and sherry trifle rounding out the menu. Curated with sommelier Tony Suarez, the wine list leans towards French and New Zealand drops, alongside international selections and three ports available by the glass.

On the cocktail front, The Duchess Blush (strawberry, pink gin, cream and sparkling water) tips its hat to the soda factory that once occupied the site, while the Pimm’s Royale, with tonic, strawberry and cucumber, is a nod to a much-loved summer staple.

Bookings and walk-ins are welcome.
