The Remix Team's Go-To Orders At Tobi

Since opening its doors just five months ago, all-day eatery Tobi has quickly cemented itself as one of Auckland’s most desirable dining destinations. The prime Ponsonby Road spot is helmed by industry legend David Lee and self-proclaimed potty mouth turned MasterChef Albert Cho of Namu Group (Candy Shop, Aigo) and is conveniently just across the road from Remix HQ.

To celebrate the recent launch of the new Remix Radiance issue, the team enjoyed a well-deserved long lunch - mimosas mandatory, of course - and shared our current go-to Tobi orders.

Steak & Salad (no frites)

European summer is just around the corner so sometimes I’ll behave and make the difficult decision to swap fries for a salad when ordering the steak frites. Luckily, Tobi’s side salad is equally delicious (hello crouton crisps and parmesan - naughty, I know) and pairs wonderfully with the seasoned-to-perfection steak.

Prawn Toast

Ordering a variety of picky bits to share is my JAM! Alongside mandatory fries, my go-to at Tobi is now the prawn toast. These crispy prawn morsels are slathered in a buffalo wing-inspired hot sauce and topped with a pickled onion concoction that cuts the spice and creaminess beautifully.

Kayser Salad & Fries

I’m officially in my Caesar salad with a side of fries and Coke era - call it a hot girl lunch, if you will. Thankfully, Tobi is helping fuel my addiction with its kayser salad and shoestring fries. I don’t know what sorcery goes on in the kitchen but those fries are next-level good! (Albert, send me your secrets please!)

Scotch Egg Sando

Being from England I’ll always jump at the chance to order anything scotch-egg related, so when I saw Tobi had given this traditional snack a spicy makeover and popped it in a sandwich, it was a no-brainer. My sammie arrived, complete with gooey yolk and spiked with a spicy Korean marinade, housed within two slices of sweet and light milk bread. And judge me all you like, this scotch egg sando required a knife and fork due to its sheer, jam-packed size!

Burrata & Fries

I’m not a lactose lover but I’ll always make an exception for burrata - specifically Tobi’s burrata. This bundle of creamy cheesy joy is practically swimming in chilli oil and crispy chilli bits - what more could a girl want? Slather it on the accompanying sourdough slices, or follow my lead and dip fries into this cheesy chilli concoction.

Gravlax Plate

I was looking for something a little lighter for lunch so the gravlax plate got my vote. This Swedish-inspired dish had a little bit of everything an indecisive diner (like myself) could want - cured salmon, soft-boiled egg, pickled veg, ricotta and sourdough toast. 10/10 would order again!
