Woman Crush Wednesday: Lorde

Lorde, easily the most notable Kiwi on the international music scene, grew up as Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor on Auckland’s North Shore.

The Takapuna-born starlet's music career started in intermediate, when the budding vocalist joined the school band, before penning her own tunes at age 15. Her big break came when she teamed up with producer Joel Little to create her debut album that included the epic tune Royals.

Numerous magazine covers, a M.A.C make-up collaboration and a handful of awards later, the 20-year-old performs multiple shows around the globe, while still finding time to share snaps of her adventures with her 4.9 million Instagram followers.

We can’t wait for her new album to launch in the next few weeks! Lorde is this week’s Woman Crush Wednesday…

1. She just slayed at Coachella
The NZ beauty just spent the past two weekends in the Californian sun, performing to thousands of people at the popular Palm Springs festival. It’s been two years since Lorde’s last major show so she pulled out all the stops with dancers in a suspended box and festival goers were treated to sneak peeks of the singer’s upcoming album with the debut of her single, Homemade Dynamite

2. She went off the grid to create her new record
Lorde’s hotly-anticipated second studio album, Melodrama, is due to release in a matter of weeks and our gal has been teasing it for a while now - she posted nine months ago that she “took a helicopter out into the wilderness spent three days alone writing and made some of the most exciting breakthroughs on this record so far. After releasing Green Light and Liability - we’re hyped to hear the rest!

3. She broke records
It’s no secret that Lorde’s debut single Royals caused a global frenzy - so it should come as no surprise that the hit topped the charts in America for nine weeks - securing the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for over two months. She even broke records along the way - being NZ’s first solo artist single to hit #1 on the charts and the youngest solo artist since Tiffany over 25 years beforehand. Lorde has breaking records and collecting awards ever since, including two Grammy's.

4. She has an obsession with Creme Eggs
Creme Eggs are great Easter treats, I think we can all agree but Lorde’s love for it goes way further. She shared how much she loved them with her followers and, while in London chatting to BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw, she even used her own song, Green Light, to create a catchy little number about her (slight) obsession! The video is hilarious, with Lorde ending, “I’m waiting for it, that Creme Egg, I want it!”

5. She’s got great pals
You must be hiding under a rock to not know about Lorde’s friendship with Taylor Swift. Lorde posted cute snaps of her gals, saying that Taylor was a “mom with no kids”. She dedicated a post to Tay saying, “I am your kid and you love me so hard I could burst. Here’s to our 3 magic years of best friendship and more moments like this squished between angels.” Aww, friendship goals!
